Far away from crowd, the journey to this lesser known himalayan hamlet (tucked in the Kumaon region near Almora) asks you to slow down before you even arrive. Winding mountain roads lead you away from the bustling trails, turning onto a quiet, slightly bumpy path into Jalna Village followed by a downhill walk through the trees. At the end of this trail, a scenic landscape opens up—a vast, secluded estate engulfed by towering deodars and scattered wildflowers. All of it reveals a staggering 180-degree panorama of Nanda Devi and Trishul, rendering the outside world a distant memory.
It is at the heart of this private estate that an intimate 01 Bedroom Stone Cottage reveals itself, a home that feels in rhythm with its surroundings. Aptly named Nyoli, a Kumaoni word meaning "song of the forest", it carries a quiet, lyrical presence. Exclusive and profoundly private, it feels as though a cozy English mountain retreat was constructed entirely from the soul of Kumaon. It is a space designed to invite creative souls to slow down, reflect, and find their own pace.
Passionately crafted by a mountain lover, the estate offers distinct corners for every mood and season. Outside, the landscape invites you to soak in the crisp winter sun on the large stone patio overlooking snow-peaks, share a lazy summer brunch under the dense canopy of trees, or enjoy high-tea amidst the deodars. Inside, an earthy palette, hand-carved details, and carefully chosen décor create a calm, grounded atmosphere where the warmth of the fireplace creates pure magic.

Stepping into Hushstay x Nyoli feels like entering a mountain sanctuary where traditional craftsmanship and silence are the primary architects. Inspired by the timeless stone cottages of England's Cotswolds but built using the ancestral wisdom of Kumaoni architecture, the cottage belongs completely to the mountains. Hand-laid stone walls, earthy mud plaster, and a traditional pataal slate roof provide a soft, natural texture, ensuring the home breathes beautifully with the Himalayan seasons.
The heart of the home is its unique U-shaped, open-plan design, anchored by a traditional indoor fireplace. Here, a plush leather Chesterfield sofa and customized live-edge furniture invite you to sink in under the glow of perfectly placed lamps. With no walls separating the living, dining, and bedroom areas, it unfolds as one continuous, uninterrupted private retreat. The layout ensures a gentle circulation of the mountain breeze, making the cottage feel both intimate and expansive.
Every element is part of a larger composition crafted by local artisans. Traditional thick stone walls, intricate carvings on wooden doors and windows add artisanal warmth to the cottage's rustic lines. THE ROOMS
The bedroom space at this romantic Kumaon Cottage is designed as an intimate retreat where simplicity enhances the experience of the mountains. Rooted in a warm, earthy palette and a vaulted wooden ceiling, the room reflects a sense of calm that aligns with the sweeping landscape outside.
With no partitions to break the gaze, the sleeping area features an elegant four-poster bed dressed in premium linens. Mornings here begin with fresh mountain air and the first rays of the sun filtering through the carved wooden windows, illuminating the snow peaks right from your pillow.
Beyond the sleeping area lies a spacious walk-in dressing space, distinguished by a magnificent carved stone washbasin. This flows seamlessly into an elemental ensuite washroom, designed to create a deeply sensory and grounding experience.

Meals are prepared by our in-house chef and are made of delectable homemade cuisine. Lunch, Dinner & Snacks can be ordered separately at the property at an additional cost. A menu is shared upon booking confirmation. We request all our guests inform the staff about their meal preferences well in advance.

Kasar Devi - 30 kms ahead/ 1 hr
Mukteshwar - 32 kms / 1 hr
Binsar - 60 kms ahead / 2 hrs

If you are driving – it is important that you have experience in hill driving as the last 500m to the property is a slightly bumpy but fairly drivable dirt road. There is a 5 min downhill walk from the parking to the estate that involves climbing stairs.

Sustainable Travel: We are very conscious about nature and we would like our guests to feel the same way. We try to reduce the use of single-use plastic as much as possible and hence, we do not provide cold drinks or bottled drinking water. Our drinking water comes from a clean natural source, we use an RO and refillable water bottles are provided in each room.

We follow a strict no smoking policy inside the house. You may ask the caretaker for an ashtray and smoke outside the house if you need to.

This is a private retreat and is offered exclusively to a maximum of 02 adults (plus kids and pets) at a time.

Electricity: Electricity is usually not a problem, however, being at an offbeat location, if there is an unprecedented power outage, we have to manage with lanterns and candles for lighting the cottage. This might also offer you an opportunity to switch off and gaze at the starry night sky. We promise you will not regret it.

Please note that like any other home in the mountains, we do not have an air-conditioner at the property. Nyoli has been designed in such a way that there is proper wind circulation if the windows are opened in the afternoon. There is an indoor fireplace for winter evenings.

We can organise separate accommodation for drivers or male house-helps. Please inform us at the time of booking. Charges are additional.

Outside guests are not allowed during the stay. The property is only accessible to guests who have booked with us.

Nyoli is meant to be a place to relax, destress and bond. There is limited connectivity for Airtel and Jio users. We do not have Wi-fi in place.

If you wish to venture further into Kumaon, a scenic drive to Jageshwar Dham offers a profound encounter with ancient mountain spirituality, while the Dhyan Peeth at Dol Ashram is perfect for deepening your meditation practice. For a day of exploration, the bohemian cafes of Kasar Devi and the dense, wildlife-rich trails of Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary are easily accessible from the estate.

We went to Nyoli with our beagle for two nights and honestly wished we had booked five. The cottage is incredibly private and feels like it belongs entirely to you. Loved the little details — the furniture, soft lighting, and the fireplace in the evenings. The estate is much larger than it appears in the photographs, with deodars, fruit trees and flowers everywhere with enough space for our dog to run around off-leash. Perfect couples retreat if you’re looking for peace rather than a packed itinerary.

This was probably the most peaceful few days we’ve had in years. Nyoli is incredibly intimate without feeling cramped, and every corner has been designed for comfort and creative retreat. The windows, the stone walls, the rugs, the lighting and especially the fireplace make it feel like a real home rather than a holiday rental. We loved moving between different parts of the estate depending on the weather — breakfast under the trees, tea among the deodars and evenings indoors. If you enjoy reading, writing, painting or simply being alone with your thoughts, this place is special.

Hushstay x Nyoli has a very different energy from the usual mountain stays. There’s something about waking up with the Himalayas outside your window and having no walls separating the bedroom, living and dining spaces. It feels like a luxury suite. I also loved how naturally the cottage sits within the estate. One morning I walked up towards the Jalna ridge and ended up spending hours wandering around. Came back, made some coffee and sat by the fireplace. Exactly the kind of holiday I needed.
