THE EXPERIENCE

“The quieter you become, the more you can hear.” — Ram Dass

Tucked into a quiet fold of the Nilgiri Hills, where the clouds drift low over tea-clad hills and the air carries the scent of wet earth and wild blooms, lies a corner of Tamil Nadu that few pass through—but those who do, never forget. In Gudalur, on the scenic route between Bengaluru and Ooty, where the dense forests of Wayanad give way to the mist-kissed tea plantations, time slows to a softer rhythm. Surrounded by the rich biodiversity of the Mudumalai and Bandipur Tiger Reserves and dotted with tribal villages, the land here is layered with stories—held in the soil, whispered through the trees, and passed on in quiet conversation.

And it’s here, on a gently sloping tea estate in the heart of this richly woven landscape, that you’ll find Hushstay x PLENTI House—a four-bedroom retreat designed not just for rest, but for renewal. What began as a home built by Phillida and Christopher Purvis to welcome friends and volunteers as part of their work with the PLENTI Project, has now opened its doors to those who seek a more intentional way of being—guests who come not to escape the world, but to meet it more mindfully.

Built from earth-baked bricks, timber reclaimed from old structures, and shaped around the trees that have long stood here, the home is a quiet homage to the land itself. Here, the architecture doesn’t impose—it listens. Winding paths echo the contours of the hill, verandahs open to sweeping views, and every stone and salvaged doorframe tells a story. In this space, nature isn’t outside—it’s within.

Each day unfolds in gentle waves—sunrises watched with tea in hand, conversations shared over lovingly prepared meals, slow walks among the tea bushes, and evenings wrapped in birdsong and the scent of rain-soaked leaves.

Come with curiosity, stay with purpose, and leave with more than just memories. Whether you're a family hoping to reconnect over shared stories and forest walks, parents introducing your children to nature and the wisdom of local tribes, or a seeker looking to slow down and truly listen—this is a place that holds space for it all.

THE SPACE

Tucked into the rolling tea country of Gudalur, this four-bedroom retreat is more than a home—it’s a mindful expression of how architecture can honor both people and place. Designed by Ajith Andagere of Andagere Architects, the house draws from the philosophy of critical regionalism, using local materials and climate-responsive design to create something deeply rooted in its landscape and culture. Every detail reflects quiet elegance and purposeful simplicity.

Set along the slopes of a hill, the home unfolds gradually—woven into the land rather than imposed upon it. Trees weren’t cleared; they were built around. Earth from the site became bricks. The house flows with the contours of the land, framed by gardens of flowering trees, forested patches, and long, open views across the valley. It features four en-suite bedrooms and a cluster of common spaces that feel both expansive and intimate.

Inside, the spaces are subtle and warm. The colour palette—soft greys, gentle blues, and natural browns—mirrors the misty landscapes outside. Salvaged windows, old doors, hand-cut stone, and reclaimed wood come together with handcrafted furniture and textiles by local artisans, giving every room character and soul without excess.

At its heart, the home brings people together. A sprawling dining table cut from a single old tree invites shared meals. Open verandahs become natural gathering spots to read, reflect, or simply watch the day unfold. The living area is designed for conversation and calm, while private nooks tucked around the home offer space to retreat inward. Indoors and outdoors flow effortlessly into one another, with light, air, and birdsong drifting in through wide openings.

Step outside, and the stillness expands. Meandering stone paths lead through gardens, shaded corners invite quiet tea sessions, and panoramic sit-outs overlook the surrounding tea plantations and forests.

This is a home that doesn’t demand attention—it rewards presence. A stay here isn’t just about where you sleep; it’s about how you feel. Quiet, connected, and deeply at ease.

GUEST REVIEWS

Our stay at this blended homestay in Gudalur was a serene escape amid lush tea plantations. Free from tech distractions, the simple yet rich ambience blended seamlessly with nature, leaving no environmental footprint. The food was a true highlight—healthy, homegrown, and carefully spiced. We were treated to authentic local cuisine like puttu with kadala curry, appam with stew, Kerala parota with flavorful veg curry, and a special Onam Sadya-style vegetarian feast upon request—each meal was a celebration of regional flavors.

The room offered breathtaking views of Gudalur town and the Nilgiri Hills right from the balcony. The mid-April weather was perfectly balanced, adding to the charm of the stay. A delightful touch was the homemade soaps provided with the toiletries—natural, aromatic, and gentle on the skin.

The local staff were exceptional—their warmth and never-fading smiles made the experience even more memorable. Every request was met with genuine hospitality. For the best experience, we highly recommend respecting the space and the natural surroundings—this place thrives on harmony with nature. And don’t miss the hidden gem just behind the stay—the tea valley view is absolutely stunning. A perfect eco-conscious retreat with soul-satisfying food, scenic beauty, and heartfelt hospitality."

Plenti House is a paradise in all ways. Every detail has been thought through and it is a most beautiful, tranquil and inspiring place. The bedrooms are extremely comfortable with good bathrooms and a shower with a perfect view. Each has its own
verandah and it is a pleasure to read on the day bed outside looking up at the extraordinary mountains and the listening to the exotic birds. Each verandah also has a purpose built desk and good WiFi.

The public spaces are equally beautiful. The food is simple and delicious, the yoga sessions were an important part of the day, and we enjoyed some wonderful walks out from the property.

The Plenti team is second to none and did everything to ensure that our stay was as comfortable and well organised as possible.

We cannot recommend Plenti highly enough.

Nestled in the heart of Gudalur, this charming homestay is a slice of paradise wrapped in nature’s embrace. Imagine waking up to the gentle rustle of the forest, the chirping of birds orchestrating your morning, and the aroma of fresh tea wafting through the air. This isn’t just a stay—it’s an experience that will make your urban soul question all your life choices.

The rooms are spacious enough to waltz in (if that’s your thing), sparkling clean, and thoughtfully designed with balconies that offer postcard-worthy views of the hills and the forest. The bathrooms? So roomy and pristine, you’ll wonder if they’re auditioning for a luxury spa magazine.

The dining area is a haven for bird watchers and bibliophiles alike, with a library that whispers, “Skip Netflix tonight; let me take you on an adventure instead.” And the open setting facing the hills? A daily front-row ticket to nature’s live performance, featuring the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets you’ll ever see.

Girish, the manager, is like a genie in disguise—except he grants hospitality wishes with a smile and a story (or ten). Subhash, the resident chef, whips up culinary masterpieces that will make your taste buds do a happy jig. Bonus: the pantry stocked with tea, coffee, and hot water is a lifesaver for late-night chai enthusiasts.

The nearby attractions—tea estates, eucalyptus gardens, Needle Rock Viewpoint, and a serene temple—add an extra sprinkle of magic to your stay. And the drive from Bangalore through the Bandipur and Mudumalai forests? It’s like a National Geographic episode come to life.

Whether you’re here for a staycation, a retreat, or just a break from reality, this place is the spot. Pro tip: Keep your camera ready for bird sightings and your appetite ready for Subhash’s next culinary creation.

This rustic haven offers great views, great food, and even greater company. If you’re looking for a reason to ditch city life (at least temporarily), this is it. Just don’t blame me if you start planning your next visit the moment you leave.
