THE EXPERIENCE
“In nature, nothing is perfect, and everything is perfect.” – Alice Walker
Some journeys feel less like travel and more like discovery. Hidden within the quieter folds of Himachal Pradesh lies the Chamba district, a region where the Himalayas still feel wild, untouched, and deeply rooted in nature. About 1.5 hours before Dalhousie, the crowd begins to fade away, replaced by dense deodar forests, hidden streams & dramatic valleys. Deep within these forests sits Barei, a tiny mountain village accessible only by a 2-kilometre trek. This side of the Himalayas embraces slow living & quietude, a private sanctuary that feels like a fever dream for hikers and birdwatchers alike.
And along one of these less-trodden forest paths, just across a river stream you chance upon an exclusive hiking retreat called Hushstay x Barei Jungle Lodge that appears, almost unexpectedly, like a hidden outpost. Perched at nearly 6,100 ft, this 03-bedroom cottage sits on the edge of a blissful 02-acre estate adjoining a forest reserve and surrounded by open valleys, a natural stream, and rows of Kashmir Willow trees grown by the owners themselves. Designed in quiet rhythm with the landscape, the private mountain home carries the charm of a hidden medieval mountain refuge emerging through the forests.
With no immediate neighbours and nothing but wilderness unfolding around it, Barei is defined by complete immersion in nature. Here, the soundtrack is made up of birdsongs, wind brushing through deodar trees, the nearby stream flowing endlessly through the terrain, and leaves crunching beneath your feet as hiking trails disappear deeper into the forest.
Barei Jungle Lodge is for travellers who seek immersion over itineraries, a hidden retreat for hikers, explorers, and nature enthusiasts drawn towards offbeat mountain experiences. If your idea of luxury is waking up beside a forest reserve and returning each evening to the quiet warmth of a secluded jungle lodge, this is exactly where you belong.

THE SPACE
Arriving at Barei Jungle Lodge after the 2 km forest hike feels like encountering a mountain structure that has grown out of the earth rather than been placed on it. Built as a low-slung Kath-kuni inspired structure, across a terraced hillside, the lodge carries a grounded, stone-forward presence - raw masonry walls, traditional sloping slate roofs, and warm wooden frames that soften the otherwise rugged structure.
The lodge spreads itself horizontally along the terrain, allowing the forest and valley to remain constantly within reach. The 03-bedrooms are designed to stay constantly connected to the outdoors. Large mountain-facing windows and beds oriented toward the wilderness ensure that even stillness inside feels connected to the movement of the outdoors. A soft, warm lighting palette runs through the interiors, cutting gently through the raw textures of mud walls and wooden surfaces, especially as dusk settles over the forest.
Life at the lodge unfolds slowly across its layered outdoor spaces, each designed to immerse you deeper into the surrounding wilderness. On the ground level, an expansive porch opens directly into the landscape, where cool mountain breezes drift through the gardens, making it the kind of place where hours quietly slip by outdoors. Upstairs, a balcony stretches closer to the canopy line, offering a quieter and more elevated perspective of the forests and valleys beyond.
As the seasons shift, so does the experience of the home - summers remain pleasantly cool and breezy, while winters transform the landscape entirely with crisp mountain air, occasional snowfall, and evenings best spent gathered around a warm bonfire and a barbeque session under the starry night sky. Beyond the home, a natural stream and hidden hiking trails invite riverside picnics and slow exploration through Barei’s untouched landscape.
At Barei Jungle Lodge, the experience is not defined by walls or interiors, but by the feeling of being deeply immersed in the landscape around you. . Every space opens toward the wilderness, every material belongs to its surroundings, and every transition keeps you lightly tethered to the outside world.
THE ROOMS
The three bedrooms at Hushstay x Barei Jungle Lodge are designed with quiet restraint, where warmth replaces ornamentation and nature remains the focal point. Earthy mud-toned walls, wooden ceilings, natural wood finishes, and soft ambient lighting create an atmosphere deeply connected to the surrounding mountain landscape.
On the ground floor, the lodge houses the spacious Kanthly Forest Suite designed for small groups & families, featuring both a twin bed setup and a double bed within the same space. Oversized windows and a private balcony open directly toward the forests, allowing the outdoors to feel constantly present.
Upstairs, the second & third bedrooms named the Jot Pass Suite & Stone Den offer a quieter, more intimate experience with an attached balcony and outdoor seating space, designed for slow evenings overlooking the valleys beyond. Across the lodge, simple wooden interiors, muted natural tones, ensuite washrooms, and indoor fireplaces bring warmth and comfort as the mountain air turns colder.

THINGS TO DO
AROUND BAREI JUNGLE LODGE
Walk through the preserved village of Barei, where traditional mountain life continues to exist quietly amidst untouched landscapes. The surrounding forests open into multiple hiking trails, including a short ridge trek behind the lodge that winds across mountain tops and village paths.
For more experienced trekkers, the climb to Jot Pass offers a rewarding full-day adventure through flower-covered ridges and sweeping Himalayan landscapes overlooking the Chamba Valley. Guests can also continue onward toward Khajjiar, often referred to as the Mini Switzerland of India, while Dalhousie remains just a scenic 1.5 hour drive away.
Closer to the lodge, a riverside picnic by the stream or a dip in the natural pool invite slower afternoons, while evenings are best spent with bonfires and barbecue dinners in the open garden under cold mountain skies. On clear nights, the absence of city lights transforms the landscape into a perfect setting for stargazing.
